Elderly malignant melanoma patients do not have increased mortality rates
Elderly patients often have comorbidities, which may contribute to a poor prognosis upon hospitalization. Comorbidities and hospital-related complications in elderly malignant melanoma patients were evaluated. A retrospective analysis was performed for malignant melanoma patient cases found in the National Inpatient Sample (NIS) database from 2003 to 2012. Differences in hospital complications and comorbidities were assessed between elderly ( ≥65 years) and nonelderly patients. Of the 7351 adult patients identified, 3930 (53.4%) were elderly.
