Prediction and Staging of Hepatic Fibrosis in Children with Hepatitis C Virus: A Machine Learning Approach.

Conclusions: Machine learning is a valuable addition to non-invasive methods of liver fibrosis prediction and staging in pediatrics. Furthermore, the obtained cutoff values for APRI and FIB-4 showed good performance and are consistent with some previously obtained cutoff values. There was some agreement between the predictions of RF, APRI and FIB-4 for the prediction and staging of fibrosis. PMID: 31406609 [PubMed]

AbstractHuman pegivirus 2 (HPgV-2) is a recently recognized pegivirus of the familyFlaviviridae. To investigate the epidemic features of HPgV-2 circulating in the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected population, we tested for antibodies and viral RNA of HPgV-2 and hepatitis C virus (HCV) with retrospective plasma samples collected from 771 HIV infections with multiple risk behaviors in Honghe Prefecture of Yunnan Province. A total of 195 subjects (25.29%) were seroreactive to HPgV-2, and 41 (5.32%) were RNA positive. Although the positive rate of HPgV-2 antibodies in HIV/HCV-coinfected individuals (27.69%) was signi...

This study included 11 samples that were found positive in HCV RNA detection and HCV Ag-Ab ELISA but negative in HCV antibody detection assays (HCV Ab ELISA and rapid), 10 samples that were found positive in HCV Ag-Ab ELISA and HCV Ab ELISA but negative in HCV Ab Rapid, 69 samples that were found positive in HCV Ag-Ab ELISA, HCV Ab ELISA, and HCV Ab Rapid, and 509 samples that were found negative in HCV Ag-Ab ELISA, HCV Ab ELISA, and HCV Ab Rapid. Three seroconversion panels, PHV 913, PHV 911 (M) and PHV904-00-1.0, and a  HCV RNA genotype qualification panel (2400-0182) acquired from Seracare Life Sciences (USA) were ...

In this report, we present the case of a patient who was diagnosed with primary biliary cholangitis and metabolic syndrome. Initial evaluation also revealed diabetes with elevated fasting plasma glucose and glycated hemoglobin. After eight weeks of treatment with ursodeoxycholic acid, a complete normalization of the hepatic biological tests was observed. A few months later, while body weight and abdominal perimeter remained stable, fasting blood glucose and glycated hemoglobin decreased significantly, compatible with diabetes disappearance. This finding supports the concept that the inflamed liver plays a major role in the...

CONCLUSIONS: We believe that the quantitative measurement by the meta-analysis will be more reliable for their use in the design of a screening strategy or in the development of prevention campaigns as compared to the prevalence estimations performed at local level. Sodium taurocholate cotransporting polypeptide (NTCP) is expressed at the surface of human hepatocytes and functions as an entry receptor of hepatitis B virus (HBV). Recently, we have reported that epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) is involved in NTCP-mediated viral internalization during the cell entry process. Here, we analyzed which function of EGFR is essential for mediating HBV internalization. In contrast to the reported crucial function of EGFR-downstream signaling for the entry of hepatitis C virus (HCV), blockade of EGFR-downstream signaling proteins, including mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), phosph...

Conclusions/importance: This updated estimate of the active PWID population size in Malaysia will help inform effective planning for the scale-up of HCV screening and treatment services. The proposed methodology is applicable to other countries that maintain national HIV registries and have conducted Integrated Biological and Behavioral Surveys among active PWID. Conclusion: LC can be safely performed in cirrhotic patients. However, higher CTP and MELD scores, operative bleeding, more blood and plasma transfusion units, longer operative time, lower platelet count, and higher INR values are predictors of poor outcome that can be improved by proper patient selection and meticulous peri-operative care and by using Harmonic scalpel shears.

The burden of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is highest in East Asia and Africa, although its incidence and mortality are rapidly rising in the United States and Europe. With the implementation of hepatitis B vaccination and hepatitis C treatment programmes worldwide, the epidemiology of HCC is shifting away from a disease predominated by viral hepatitis – an increasing proportion of cases are now attributable to non-alcoholic steatohepatitis. Surveillance using ultrasound, with or without alpha-fetoprotein, every 6 months has been associated with improved early detection and improved overall survival; however, lim...
