Difficulty in removing biofilm from dry surfaces

This report demonstrates that a Staphylococcus aureus biofilm is significantly more difficult to remove than dried planktonic bacteria. A single wiping action removed>99.9% (>3 log10) of dried planktonic bacteria, whereas only 1.4 log10 of biofilm (96.66%) was removed by 50 wiping actions with a standardized wiping process.

Authors: Kaul G, Saxena D, Dasgupta A, Chopra S Abstract Sarecycline hydrochloride (Seysara) is a novel, narrow-spectrum tetracycline derivative approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in October 2018 for the treatment of inflammatory non-nodular moderate to severe acne vulgaris. It was initially developed by Paratek Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (U.S.) and Allergan plc (U.S.), which later was acquired by Almirall S.A. (Barcelona, Spain). Almirall S.A. obtained U.S. FDA approval of oral sarecycline tablets under the trade name Seysara. Sarecycline exhibits antibacterial activity against important skin/soft ...

Bacterial Aetiologies of Lower Respiratory Tract Infections among Adults in Yaoundé, Cameroon. Biomed Res Int. 2019;2019:4834396 Authors: Tchatchouang S, Nzouankeu A, Kenmoe S, Ngando L, Penlap V, Fonkoua MC, Pefura-Yone EW, Njouom R Abstract Lower respiratory tract infections (LRTIs) remain a challenge in African healthcare settings and only few data are available on their aetiology in Cameroon. The purpose of this study was to access the bacterial cause of LRTIs in patients in Cameroon by two methods. Methods. Participants with LRTIs were enrolled in the referral centre for respiratory diseas...

AbstractHistorically, vancomycin has been considered a primary therapeutic option for treating infections withStaphylococcus aureus, but isolates with reduced vancomycin susceptibility (SA-RVS) (MIC  ≥ 4 μg/mL) have emerged. Telavancin, a semisynthetic lipoglycopeptide, is an alternative treatment option forS. aureus, but data examining telavancin activity against SA-RVS are limited. In the present study, we characterize 300 isolates ofS. aureus isolates (50 vancomycin-susceptible (VSSA) isolates and 250 SA-RVS isolates) from a large tertiary care, academic medical center, 51.8% of which were methi...

Conclusion: The results indicated that the presence of Staphylococcal of superantigen C in the body of rats has enhanced the expression of the CD18 inflammatory marker more than 3 times. This valuable finding is an introduction to further research and could provide new methods to prevent and control inflammatory diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis. PMID: 31719966 [PubMed]

AbstractMethicillin-resistantStaphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is an important cause of infections in humans. Photodynamic therapy using blue light (450  nm) could possibly be used to reduce MRSA on different human tissue surfaces without killing the human cells. It could be less harmful than 300–400 nm light or common disinfectants. We applied blue light ± riboflavin (RF) to MRSA and keratinocytes, in an in vitro liquid layer model, and compar ed the effect to elimination using common disinfection fluids. MRSA dilutions (8 × 105/mL) in wells were exposed to blue light (450  nm) &...

nioł A series of 18 aminochalcone derivatives were obtained in yields of 21.5–88.6% by applying the classical Claisen-Schmidt reaction. Compounds 4–9, 14 and 16–18 with 4-ethyl, 4-carboxy-, 4-benzyloxy- and 4-benzyloxy-3-methoxy groups were novel, not previously described in the scientific literature. To determine the biological properties of the synthesized compounds, anticancer and antimicrobial activity assays were performed. Antiproliferative potential was evaluated on four different human colon cancer cell lines—HT-29, LS180, LoVo and LoVo/DX —using the SRB assay ...

This study aims to recruit at least 120 cases and 360 controls matched by age, ethnicity, gender, deprivation, district, and time period. For data collection, a comprehensive pre-tested questionnaire focussed on exposures during the four weeks prior to illness or interview will be used. Linked data include previous hospitalisations, dental records, and school characteristics. Specimen collection includes a throat swab (Group A Streptococcus), a nasal swab (Staphylococcus aureus), blood (vitamin D, ferritin, DNA for genetic testing, immune-profiling), and head hair (nicotine). A major strength of this study is its comprehen...

The mannose receptor (MR) is a C-type lectin involved in endocytosis and with a poorly defined ability to modulate cellular activation. We investigated the effect of mannan treatment prior to stimulation of murine bone marrow-derived dendritic cells with the Gram-positive bacteria Lactobacillus acidophilus NCFM (L. acidophilus) on the induction of Interleukin (IL)-12. Mannan enhanced the IL-12 production induced by L. acidophilus in a dose dependent manner (up to 230% enhancement). Additionally, mannan-enhanced IL-12 induction was also demonstrated with another Gram-positive bacteria, Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), whi...
