Genetic Testing is Breast Cancer Prevention

If you have battled breast cancer and have a family, the greatest fear – even more than recurrence - is that one of your children will develop the disease. A breast cancer diagnosis is brutal on any family when it affects just one member, the thought of other loved ones being ravaged by cancer is an additional burden. My family knows this fear we have tested positive for BRCA2. Besides myself, my loved ones have a very high risk of developing the disease. Despite all the billions of dollars raised and spent on breast cancer research, the best defense we have against the disease is prevention and early detection. That is why genetic testing is so important. Being able to find out that you are genetically predisposed and at a high risk for breast cancer is really significant. That means you can find out how to stop the disease before any diagnosis. Sister is in a watch and wait program and so is my niece. Neither has lost their breasts and neither has been diagnosed with the disease. They are empowered and in control however because they know they carry the BRCA2 gene mutation. The Affordable Care Act, affectionately known as Obamacare will empower all women who may be genetically inclined to develop breast cancer. The preventative aspect of the Act includes genetic testing as a preventative measure.
