The deformation dynamics of Twinning-like Lattice Reorientation in magnesium nanowires

Publication date: 1 November 2019Source: Materials Letters, Volume 254Author(s): Hui-Shi Zhang, Xiao-Zhi Tang, Yong Mao, Ya-Fang GuoAbstractTwinning-like Lattice Reorientation (TLR) is a newly reported unconventional plasticity mechanism in magnesium, producing a crystalline grain with 90° rotated lattice relative to the parent. In this paper the deformation dynamics of TLR are investigated using molecular dynamics. The sensitivities of TLR nucleation and growth to temperatures and strain rates manifest the thermal activation of TLR. The free surface effect is also revealed on TLR formation at sub-micron lengthscale.
