Dual Use and Dual Truths: Categorizing the Adolescent Electronic Cigarette User

The rapid rise of electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) use among youth subverts our traditional understanding of adolescent tobacco use, the natural history of nicotine addiction through the use of combustible tobacco, and the implications of dual use of e-cigarettes and combustible cigarettes. The ramifications of initiating tobacco use with nicotine vapor in adolescence are largely unknown, as are the appropriate classifications of adolescent tobacco users in the e-cigarette era or means to identify the populations most likely to benefit from nicotine cessation strategies.
