In this study, we aimed to describe sexual function in Puerto Rican women with IBD. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study of women with IBD at the University of Puerto Rico Center for IBD. Patients were invited to anonymously complete the validated Spanish version of the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) questionnaire. On this 36-point scale, a score of 26.55 or less is defined as sexual dysfunction. Data were analyzed by diagnosis, presence of an ostomy, and age, using descriptive statistics, ANOVA, Student's t test, and logistic regression. RESULTS: One hundred women completed the FSFI questionnaire, wi...

AbstractBackgroundTherapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) is important in optimizing use of biologics in inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). However, the role of proactive TDM during remission remains uncertain.MethodsThis retrospective study included patients receiving infliximab (IFX) therapy at Massachusetts General Hospital or Erasmus University Medical Center. All eligible patients had completed induction phase of IFX and were in clinical and endoscopic remission. Our primary outcome was clinical relapse within 2  years after baseline. Multivariable regression models examined the association between infliximab trough le...

Unfortunately, not everybody enjoys reversal of SIBO with our b...

Conclusions As the intestinal mucosa surface constitutes the major surface of the body which is in direct contact with the outer environment, intestinal immune homeostasis must be accurately regulated. The interplay between commensal microbiota, intestinal stromal cells, and the mucosal immune system components should guarantee the intestinal homeostasis to avoid a sustained inflammation that could induce tissue damage. However, several factors can lead to inflammation through homeostasis breakdown. Figure 1 summarizes the main points that have been reviewed here. We have described what it is known so far about the role o...
