Postoperative atrial fibrillation is associated with delayed early rehabilitation after heart valve surgery: a multicenter study.

CONCLUSIONS: POAF was clinical predictors of delayed early rehabilitation in patients undergoing heart valve surgery. The combination of POAF with delayed early rehabilitation conferred a high risk of decline in lower-extremity function during hospitalization. PMID: 31289706 [PubMed]

ConclusionPredicting overall readmissions after open ‐heart valve surgery is difficult as causes of readmissions vary and different causes are associated with different characteristics. Future studies should target reducing cause‐specific readmissions.

This study is an extremely important step in assessing the Amplatzer Amulet as an effective non-prescription drug alternative for patients with AFib who are at an increased risk for ischemic stroke." In an email sent to MD+DI, Abbott wrote, “We already have an Amulet IDE trial underway that is intended to support our submission for approval in the U.S. for Amplatzer Amulet. The newly announced CATALYST trial will support our submission for an expanded indication for Amulet as a safe and effective alternative to NOAC drugs for patients with atrial fibrillation and at risk of stroke.”...

ConclusionsThis is the largest series to date reporting>30-day follow-up for patients undergoing venous ablation procedures while receiving anticoagulation and the longest follow-up reported of any series. Durability, safety, and efficacy of vein ablation in patients receiving anticoagulation are comparable to those in control patients. Anticoagulation should not be considered a contraindication to endothermal ablation of the GSV or SSV for symptomatic venous reflux.

CONCLUSION: Baseline characteristics and epidemiology were different between MUV and single-valve procedures. The in-hospital mortality and postoperative complications for MUV procedures remained considerably higher and determinants of mortality were relatively different across procedures types. These findings serve as a benchmark for further studies, as well as suggest a continued search for explanations of MUV outcomes. PMID: 31895035 [PubMed - in process]

For decades, warfarin (Coumadin) was the standard anticoagulant medication used to prevent blood clots, which can lead to stroke, in people with atrial fibrillation (afib). Direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs), sometimes called novel oral anticoagulants (NOACs), are a new type of anticoagulant medication that came on the market in 2010. In 2019, the American Heart Association/American College of Cardiology/Heart Rhythm Society (AHA/ACC/HRS) updated their afib guidelines to strongly recommend using DOACs over warfarin in people with afib. Warfarin is effective, but has downsides Afib is a condition in which the upper chambers...

AbstractTricuspid regurgitation after mitral valve surgery is common and it may affect long-term survival and quality of life. The pathophysiology of this lesion after mitral valve surgery in patients without preoperative tricuspid regurgitation remains elusive in most cases. Correcting a tricuspid annulus of ≥ 40 mm by means of an annuloplasty at the time of mitral valve surgery in patients without tricuspid regurgitation has been propoYiu KH, Wong A, Pu L, et al. The objective of this study is to investigate the incidence, predictors, and clinical outcomes of PPM after TAVR.MethodsThis is a retrospective study of 991 consecutive patients who underwent TAVR procedure at a tertiary referral center, between April 2012 and February 2019. Patients were stratified by the presence or absence of PPM, defined as an effective orifice area/body surface area ratio ≤0.85 cm2/m2. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was used to determine independent predictors of PPM. Kaplan ‐Meier survival estimates were used to determine overall 5‐year survival.ResultsPPM was encountered in...

Conclusions: Infective endocarditis caused by S. agalactiae is very rare, particularly in patients without underlying structural heart disease. This study showed that IE due to S. Agalactiae is a disease with high mortality when associated with neurological complication, heart failure but especially when it is recurrent and hits valve prosthesis.
