The graphic novel Hey, Kiddo opens in “Hope Cemetery,” where the teenage protagonist is being taught to drive. His grandfather turned-driving-instructor quips that their location is perfect: “Everyone is already dead.” This is a fitting introduction for Jarrett Krosoczka’s melancholy yet heartwarming memoir of growing up in th e shadow of his mother’s drug addiction. Although Krosoczka’s tale is set in the 1980s and 1990s, in light of our opioid crisis, it is poignantly “now.”
