A novel driver hazard perception sensitivity model based on drivers' characteristics: A simulator study.

Conclusion: The results of this research may be useful in educating and advertising programs. It also could enhance sensitivity to perception of hazards such as pedestrians, animals, and fixed obstacles among young and novice drivers. PMID: 31180727 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Authors: Dzięciołowska-Baran E, Gawlikowska-Sroka A, Szczurowski J Abstract Polysomnography, a gold standard for the diagnosis of sleep-disordered breathing, is a complex investigation requiring access to the sleep laboratory. Thus, sleep-disordered breathing could be underdiagnosed. The aim of this paper was to investigate the feasibility and effectiveness of self-performed investigation of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in the home setting, using a portable device, and to assess the comfort and simplicity of the procedure from the patient's perspective. The study included 68 middle-aged patients (21 women and 47...

ConclusionsAnterior osteotomy just to the midline of inferior border and horizontal osteotomy to the mandibular foramen are associated with split patterns that result in optimal rigid fixation and passive bony overlap for OSA patients undergoing MMA.Clinical relevanceOptimal surgical technique has the most significant influence in allowing rapid return to function after MMA in patients with OSA.

M, Cajochen C Abstract AIMS: Chronic exposure to nocturnal transportation noise has been linked to cardiovascular disorders with sleep impairment as the main mediator. Here we examined whether nocturnal transportation noise affects the main stress pathways, and whether it relates to changes in the macro and micro structure of sleep. METHODS AND RESULTS: Twenty-six young healthy participants (12 women, 24.6 ± 0.7 years, mean ± SE) spent five consecutive 24-h days and one last morning in the laboratory. The first (baseline) and last (recovery) nights comprised a quiet ambient s...

Publication date: March 2020Source: Developmental Review, Volume 55Author(s): Saoirse Mac Cárthaigh, Claire Griffin, John PerryAbstractObtaining sufficient sleep is a protective factor against mental and physical ill-health. However, evidence suggests that, among adolescents, the proliferation of mobile devices has contributed to a decline in sleep quality and duration over the past few decades. There is a paucity of research on the relationship between sleep and problematic smartphone use. Of the studies which have researched this association, all have relied on homogeneous samples within specific cultural contexts...

We present a mathematical model of human sleep/wake regulation with thermoregulatory functions to gain quantitative insight into the effects of ambient temperature on sleep quality. Our model extends previous models by incorporating equations for the metabolic processes that control thermoregulation during sleep. We present numerical simulations that provide a quantitative answer for how humans adjust by changing the normal sleep stage progression when it is challenged with ambient temperatures away from thermoneutral. We explore the dynamics for a single night and several nights. Our results indicate that including the ef...
