Prevalence of suspected glaucoma in Haiti: a pilot study.

CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of ocular hypertension and glaucoma based on suspect optic nerves in our sample population was high, indicating a strong need for access to ophthalmologic care in the Haitian population. PMID: 31109474 [PubMed - in process]

Elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) due to insufficient aqueous humor outflow through the trabecular meshwork and Schlemm's canal (SC) is the most important risk factor for glaucoma, a leading cause of blindness worldwide. We previously reported loss of function mutations in the receptor tyrosine kinase TEK or its ligand ANGPT1 cause primary congenital glaucoma in humans and mice due to failure of SC development. Here, we describe a novel approach to enhance canal formation in these animals by deleting a single allele of the gene encoding the phosphatase PTPRB during development. Compared toTek haploinsufficient mice, whic...

Conclusions: Although topical preservative-free brimonidine tartrate treated eyes had a more burning sensation at the first drop, the two formulations were similar in terms of ocular tolerability in the short term period. Also, both formulations were found to reduce IOP at a similar rate. PMID: 31615279 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

In conclusion, in rabbit, dog, and monkey, a single topical ocular drop of TAK-639 had a significant IOP-lowering effect that correlated well with increases in TAK-639 levels in aqueous humor and resulted in minimal systemic exposure of TAK-639. PMID: 31626797 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Abstract PURPOSE: To evaluate the additive intraocular pressure-lowering effect of twice-daily brinzolamide 1%/brimonidine 0.2% fixed-dose combination (BBFC) as an adjunct to a prostaglandin analog (PGA) in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension insufficiently controlled with PGA monotherapy. METHODS: In this Phase 4, double-masked trial, patients aged ⩾18 years, with a mean intraocular pressure of ⩾19 and

AbstractGlaucoma is one of the most frequent causes of visual impairment worldwide, and involves selective damage to retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) and their axons. We analyzed the effect of enriched environment (EE) housing on the optic nerve, and retinal alterations in an induced model of ocular hypertension. For this purpose, maleWistar rats were weekly injected with vehicle or chondroitin sulfate (CS) into the eye anterior chamber for 10  weeks and housed in standard environment (SE) or EE. EE housing prevented the effect of experimental glaucoma on visual evoked potentials (VEPs), retinal anterograde transport, ph...

Authors: Radell JE, Serle JB Abstract The fixed-dose combination (FDC) of netarsudil 0.02%/ latanoprost 0.005% was approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on March 12, 2019, for the reduction of intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients with open-angle glaucoma (OAG) and ocular hypertension (OHT). Netarsudil is a Rho kinase (ROCK) inhibitor and latanoprost is a prostaglandin analogue (PGA). Once-daily administration of this FDC reduces IOP by enhancing aqueous outflow through both the trabecular pathways (ROCK inhibition) and uveoscleral pathways (PGA). Two phase III clinical trials, MERCURY-1...

Recently, agonistic autoantibodies (agAAb) activating the β2-adrenergic receptor were detected in primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) or ocular hypertension (OHT) patients and were linked to intraocular pressure (IOP) (1). The aim of the present study was to quantify β2-agAAb in the sera of glaucoma suspects and patients with primary and secondary glaucoma. Patients with OHT (n = 33), pre-perimetric POAG (pre-POAG; n = 11), POAG (n = 28), and 11 secondary OAG (SOAG) underwent ophthalmological examinations including examinations with Octopus G1 perimetry and morphometry. Twenty-five healthy individuals served as co...

Purpose: To test whether pattern electroretinogram (PERG) can early detect retinal ganglion cells dysfunction in ocular hypertension. Design: Cross-sectional observational study. Participants: The study included 3 groups: control, primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and ocular hypertension (OHT) groups with 30 eyes in each group. Materials and Methods: Visual fields were examined using automated perimetry with central 24-2 program. Optical coherent tomography (OCT) was done to assess the neuroretinal rim area, vertical cup/disc ratio, and average superior and inferior retinal nerve fiber layer thickness. PERG was...
