Commentary on: Mechanisms Linking White Matter Lesions, Tract Integrity and Depression in Alzheimer's Disease

The links between late life depression, cerebrovascular disease (CVD) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) are complicated and multidirectional. The vascular depression hypothesis states that cerebrovascular disease (CVD) can predispose, precipitate and perpetuate late-life depression (LLD), and patients with LLD have higher rates of white matter hyperintensities (WMH) and frontal-executive cognitive dysfunction. Damage to key fronto-subcortical white matter tracts is thought to produce the affective, cognitive and behavioral symptoms seen in LLD.
