Indicators of R & D in Small Businesses: Data from the 2009-15 Business R & D and Innovation Survey

Small businesses are often incubators of new technologies that will be important to future economic growth. In 2015, U.S. companies performed nearly $356 billion in R&D. Smaller companies (fewer than 250 employees) accounted for 12% of this total. This InfoBrief follows the classification of company size recommended by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. R&D data by company size are shown for the years 2008-15, and the effect of the Great Recession on R&D is examined by company size. Data are from the Business R&D and Innovation Survey, developed and cosponsored by the National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics (NCSES) within the National Science Foundation and by the Census Bureau.
