Authors: Long A, Bunning B, Sampath V, DeKruyff RH, Nadeau KC Abstract Asthma and rhinitis are complex, heterogeneous diseases characterized by chronic inflammation of the upper and lower airways. While genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified a number of susceptible loci and candidate genes associated with the pathogenesis of asthma and allergic rhinitis (AR), the risk-associated alleles account for only a very small percent of the genetic risk. In allergic airway and other complex diseases, it is thought that epigenetic modifications, including DNA methylation, histone modifications, and non-coding ...

In conclusion, our results suggest a previously unknown mechanism whereby the canonical NF-κB cascade and a mitochondrial fission pathway interdependently regulate endothelial inflammation. Lin28 as a Target for Nerve Regeneration https://www.fightaging.org/archives/2020/05/lin28-as-a-target-for-nerve-regeneration/ Researchers here show that the gene Lin28 regulates axon regrowth. In mice, raised levels of Lin28 produce greater regeneration of nerve injuries. Past research has investigated Lin28 from the standpoint of producing a more general improvement in regenerative capacity. It improves mitoch...

Conclusion: We conclude that acute, short-term SHS exposure had a statistically significant effect on spirometry in female asthma patients but did not significantly modify spirometric indices 24 h later in COPD patients. PMID: 32441557 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Abstract Medication management in children and adolescents with obesity is challenging because both developmental and pathophysiological changes may impact drug disposition and response. Evidence to date indicates an effect of obesity on drug disposition for certain drugs used in this population. This work identified published studies evaluating drug dosing, pharmacokinetics (PK), and effect in pediatric patients with obesity, focusing on 70 common medications used in a pediatric network of 42 US medical centers. A PubMed search revealed 33 studies providing PK and/or effectiveness data for 23% (16 of 70) of medic...

Authors: Calzavara-Pinton P, Belloni Fortina A, Bonamonte D, Marseglia GL, Miraglia Del Giudice M, Musarra A, Nettis E, Neri I, Patruno C, Stingeni L, Peris K, RADAR Group Abstract Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory disease with increasing global incidence, which has a multifactorial pathogenesis and a variable expressivity. Clinical features of AD are different in adults compared to children, but it is well recognized the substantial impact of the disease on patients' quality of life at any age. Indeed, little is known about AD in adolescence, a period of life generally associated with high psycholog...

Conclusions The risk for cardiovascular disease in people with severe high-level spinal cord injury is a major clinical concern. Forthcoming studies in the SPICA will provide new knowledge of cardiopulmonary health in this cohort, which can guide future research and be used to develop long-term management.

AbstractAcute respiratory virus infections, such as influenza and RSV, are predominant causes of asthma exacerbations. Eosinophils act as a double ‐edged sword in exacerbations in that they are activated by viral infections but also can capture and inactivate respiratory viruses. Phosphodiesterase type 4 (PDE4) is abundantly expressed by eosinophils and has been implicated in their activation. This exploratory study aims to determine whether these opposing roles of eosinophils activation of eosinophils upon interaction with virus can be modulated by selective PDE4 inhibitors and whether eosinophils from healthy, moderate...

Dear Carol: My mom, age 79, has had steadily declining health for several years. Arthritis is a genetic problem in my family, so pain is an issue. Besides that, she has severe asthma, so her lungs show a lot of deterioration. The family has handled all of this but now her thinking is getting foggy. She’s resisted moving to assisted living even though we all know that this would probably be best. I work full time, so even though I live in her community, I can’t be with her all the time. I also have teenage kids so even checking on Mom every day is getting to be too much. I know that I’m just getting s...
