CONCLUSIONS:  The survey provides important practical insights into outpatient sigmoidoscopy. A majority of the physicians does not support evidence-based sigmoidoscopy for CRC screening. However, individuals who reject a colonoscopy are, in line with the current guideline, identified as a target group for a screening sigmoidoscopy. The benefit from an additionally offered sigmoidoscopy in CRC screening should be further analyzed with special consideration given to the preferences of insurees within the German healthcare system. ConclusionsThe prevalence rates for neoplasms, advanced neoplasms, and CRC in our current study were statistically significantly higher compared with those seen in average-risk populations. This supports the importance of more intensive screening for this subpopulation in preventing colorectal cancers, as well as pre-and early-cancerous neoplasms.

ConclusionsScreening colonoscopy was associated with greater reductions in CRC mortality than screening sigmoidoscopy, and with a greater reduction in the distal than the proximal colon. These results provide additional information on the relative benefits of screening for CRC with sigmoidoscopy and colonoscopy.
