The association between county-level safety net treatment access and opioid hospitalizations and mortality in New York

Increases in pharmaceutical opioid sales have paralleled the quadrupling of prescription opioid overdose deaths and spikes in emergency department visits for non-medical opioid prescription overdoses. In response, federal and state governments have advanced a myriad of policies to reduce opioid availability and increase treatment access, aimed to ultimately reduce opioid-related mortality. Despite these efforts, including ACA Medicaid expansion and more robust prescription drug monitoring programs, opioid-related mortality has continued to rise in NY and 29 other states.
