Feasibility of reduced-dose CT of the head and neck with iterative reconstruction: a phantom and prospective clinical study.

Feasibility of reduced-dose CT of the head and neck with iterative reconstruction: a phantom and prospective clinical study. Acta Radiol. 2019 Feb 18;:284185119830276 Authors: Chung MS, Choi YJ, Hwang JY, Yoon DH, Seo KJ, Lee JH, Baek JH Abstract BACKGROUND: There is growing concern over computed tomography (CT)-related radiation exposure, particularly in patients requiring head and neck CT due to the proximity of radiosensitive organs. PURPOSE: We aimed to evaluate the feasibility of reduced-dose CT of the head and neck with iterative reconstruction in a phantom and patient study. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In the phantom study, low-contrast resolution test of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine CT performance phantom was scanned to determine the lowest acceptable tube current (mAs). In the patient study, three sets of CT images (standard-dose [200 mAs] and reduced-dose with iterative reconstruction or filtered back projection [FBP]) were prospectively obtained. The image noise, qualitative image quality, and radiation dose were compared. RESULTS: In the phantom study, 100 mAs was determined as the lowest acceptable value. In the patient study (n = 29), reduced-dose CT with FBP showed significantly higher image noise and lower qualitative image quality than reduced-dose CT with iterative reconstruction and standard-dose CT ( P  0.05). The radiation dose of the reduced-dose CT was significantly lower t...

CONCLUSIONS: Absolok® clips are a valid alternative to Hem-o-Lok® clips to secure blood vessels at the level of tumor bed and to perform a sliding-clip renorrhaphy in patients who underwent open or robot-assisted partial nephrectomy. PMID: 31833724 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

ConclusionsOccult nodal disease was frequently identified in peripheral N1 stations (11-13) in patients with small (≤2 cm) clinical N0 NSCLC. Hilar lymphadenectomy is essential for accurate staging in the management of patients with small clinical N0 NSCLC.

This study suggests that fissures can provide a pathway for microorganisms to enter the dentinal tubules, potentially resulting in local pulpal inflammation. It appears that in healthy teeth, vital odontoblasts react by producing reactionary (tertiary) dentin, which lacks patent tubules and thus provides a proper seal.

ConclusionGiant hydronephrosis can present rare symptoms as “intractable hiccups”. The selection of treatment should be made depending on the cause.

We present the case of an asymptomatic woman, a chronic heavy smoker, who presented with an incidental lung mass and mediastinal lymphadenopathy. Bronchoscopy with transbronchial biopsy and endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration did not show malignancy. A positron emission tomography/computed tomography scan showed increased uptake with a standardized uptake value of 26.4 in the mediastinal lymph node and an additional hypermetabolic right supraclavicular lymph node. Surgical biopsy of the supraclavicular node revealed non-necrotizing granuloma. Discussion of the clinical dilemma is provided.

Objectives: We tested the hypothesis that admission serum magnesium levels are associated with extent of hemorrhage in patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage. Design: Single-center prospective observational study. Setting: Tertiary hospital neurologic ICU. Patients: Patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage. Interventions: Clinically indicated CT scans and serum laboratory studies. Measurements and Main Results: Demographic, clinical, laboratory, and radiographic data were analyzed. Extent of initial hemorrhage was graded semi-quantitatively on admission CT scans using the modified Fisher ...

Conclusion: We observed significantly reduced (1) weight gaining ratio (average -1.86%, up to -3.3%), (2) visceral fat accumulation ratio (average -4.30%, up to -9.1%), and (3) changes in gut microbiota population. All these consequences could support the "health benefit" functionality of AMW. PMID: 31827547 [PubMed]

We present a 48 year-old active duty physician who initially presented in 2007 with dyspnea and cough. Despite the absence of variable obstruction on spirometry, a clinical diagnosis of asthma was made. The patient's symptoms were temporized with inhaled corticosteroids and bronchodilators, titrated to his symptoms, until eventual therapeutic failure resulted in re-referral to pulmonary. Chest computed tomography (CT) showed ground-glass nodules and patchy airspace opacities with evidence of thoracic lymphadenopathy. A positron emission tomography CT (PET CT) showed diffuse adenopathy throughout his thorax and abdomen with...
