Evaluation of deformable image registration accuracy for CT images of the thorax region
External beam radiation therapy may increase survival for patients with lung tumors [1 –3]. However, radiation therapy in the thorax region is associated with uncertainties due to respiratory motions that could alter the effect of the treatment from what was planned. This is especially important for modulated treatment techniques such as volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) or in tensity modulated proton therapy (IMPT) where the absorbed dose to the target volume is successively built up from different small beam segments covering different parts of the total target volume.
