Aequanimitas means imperturbability and was regarded by Sir William Osler as the premier quality of a good physician. Sir Osler, in his valedictory address at the University of Pennsylvania, May 1, 1889, described aequanimitas asImperturbability means coolness and presence of mind under all circumstances, calmness amid storm, clearness of judgment in moments of grave peril, ….As imperturbability is largely a bodily endowment, I regret to say that there are those amongst you, who, owing to congenital defects, may never be able to acquire it.
