The impact of socioeconomic factors on the early postoperative complication rate after laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery

Bariatric surgery offers a safe and effective treatment to the various metabolic and cardiovascular comorbid diseases of morbid obesity in patients with a Body Mass Index (BMI)>35 kg/m2 [1, 2]. Even if the risk for complication after surgery is low, the high number of procedures performed each year results in an overall complication rate that is substantial. Patients with lower socioeconomic status and low level of education are known to have an increased risk for complication after other surgical procedures [3, 4], may not attend follow-up visits [5], and may experience poorer outcome [6].
