220. Relationship Problems Associated With Pregnancy/Childbirth Complications Among Young Disadvantaged Mothers And Fathers: Does Co-Parenting Counseling Help?

The primary purpose of this study was to compare two versions of The Young Parenthood Program (YPP; Florsheim et al. 2012), which is a co-parenting counseling program for expectant adolescent mothers and fathers. Targeted outcomes included: (1) improving co-parenting relationship skills; (2) preventing intimate partner violence; and (3) reducing maternal stress/anxiety/depression across the transition to parenthood. The fundamental premise of the model is that if at-risk couples are taught positive communication skills during their pregnancy, they will function better as co-parents and have more positive adjustments to parenthood.
