This study aimed to investigate the prognostic value of PNR and PWR in acute ischemic stroke patients treated with EVT. METHODS: Poor functional outcome was defined as Modified Rankin Scale (mRS) of 3-6 at 3 months, Symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage (sICH) was diagnosed based on CT scan and classified according to the criterial of Heidelberg Bleeding Classification. Binary logistical regression was used to analyze the relationship of PWR, PNR with functional outcome and symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage (sICH). RESULTS: Patients with good prognosis had higher PNR and PWR value (29 vs. 24, P=0.002) (22 vs. 19, P...

The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), has spread exponentially worldwide. In Brazil, the number of infected people diagnosed has been increasing and, as in other countries, it has been associated with a high risk of contamination in healthcare teams. For healthcare professionals, the full use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is mandatory, such as wearing surgical or filtering facepiece class 2 (FFP2) masks, waterproof aprons, gloves, and goggles, in addition to training in care processes. A reduction in the number of face-to-face visits an...

The objective of the present study was to analyze frequency and distribution patterns of specific vestibular and non-vestibular diagnoses in an interdisciplinary university emergency room (ER), including data on daytime and season of presentation. A retrospective chart analysis of all patients seen in a one-year period was performed. In the ER 4.23% of all patients presented with VD (818 out of 19,345). The most frequent-specific diagnoses were BPPV (19.9%), stroke/transient ischemic attack (12.5%), acute unilateral vestibulopathy/vestibular neuritis (UVH; 8.3%), and functional VD (8.3%). Irrespective of the diagnosis, the...

There is accumulating data suggesting that the ischemic stroke may be increased in patients with corona virus disease 2019 (COVID-19) due to hyper coagulopathy1,2. An increase in acute ischemic stroke patients who require mechanical thrombectomy is to be expected particularly in regions with high rates of COVID-191.

Authors: Stepien K, Furczynska P, Zalewska M, Nowak K, Wlodarczyk A, Owsianka I, Skorek P, Zalewski J, Nessler J Abstract BACKGROUND: Recently heart failure (HF) has been found to be a new dementia risk factor, nevertheless their relations in patients following HF decompensation remain unknown. We sought to investigate whether a screening diagnosis for dementia (SDD) in this high-risk population may predict unfavorable long-term clinical outcomes. METHODS: 142 patients following HF decompensation requiring hospitalization were enrolled. Within a median time of 55 months all patients were screened for dementia w...

CONCLUSIONS: This study suggested a positive association between plasma TMAO and ischemic stroke. Further studies are required to explore the role of plasma TMAO concentrations in predicting stroke risk. PMID: 32641646 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Conclusion: We showed that repeated attachment of the styloid process and ICA may trigger an ICA dissection during head rotation. This finding would be helpful for understanding the causes of vascular Eagle syndrome. PMID: 32637216 [PubMed]

Conclusion: tPA treatment is frequently used as first-line therapy for acute ischemic stroke. Therefore, physicians should be aware of the potential for the SCEH in patients presenting with hemiparesis, as tPA administration may increase cervical hematoma leading to clinical deterioration. With this case, we intended to warn about SCEH as a rare but possible entity, since its early recognition and prompt clinical intervention may improve neurological outcomes. PMID: 32637210 [PubMed]

(American Heart Association) Patients with COVID-19 who have an acute ischemic stroke (AIS) experience more severe strokes, have worse functional outcomes and are more likely to die of stroke than AIS patients who do not have COVID-19. The wide range of complications associated with COVID-19 likely explain the worse outcomes.
