Suicidal ideation in the context of ketamine infusion: Relationship with depression and anxiety symptom clusters

Objective: Suicide is both a leading cause of death and common reason for psychiatric emergency services. Currently, there are no approved pharmacologic treatments for emergent, acute suicidal ideation. Ketamine, an NMDA receptor antagonist, has been associated with rapid reductions in suicidal ideation after infusion (within 1hour), but the relationship of suicidal ideation response to other symptoms, such as depression and anxiety, is not known. Understanding the dynamic between ideation and affective symptoms in the context of ketamine infusion may point to clinical indications for administration in emergency settings and highlight possible neurobiological underpinnings of suicide risk.
