Emotion processing deficits and emotion-related disruption of working memory in psychotic disorders

Background: Deficits in emotional processing and working memory (WM) dysfunction have both been found to show prominent impairments in patients with schizophrenia, and their biological correlates have been recommended as candidates for biomarker development by Cognitive Neuroscience Treatment Research to Improve Cognition in Schizophrenia (CNTRICS) initiative. These socio-cognitive deficits have been shown to be key predictors of quality of life and functioning in schizophrenia. However, it is unclear whether these deficits and imaging biomarkers are indicative specifically of schizophrenia, or generally of psychosis, and whether these socio-cognitive neuroscience measures can explain illness course and real-world functioning.
