Trends in PDA treatment: is less really more?

A patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) occurs in the majority of extremely preterm infants, yet optimal management practices for the PDA remain uncertain. Some retrospective cohort studies have suggested that a “less is more approach” reduces the morbidity of therapies such as ductal ligation without increasing the consequences of persistent ductal patency. In the absence of large randomized trials, longitudinal databases can be valuable in testing these assumptions. In this volume of The Journal, Haga dorn et al took advantage of the large database maintained by the California Perinatal Quality Care Collaborative (CPQCC).
