Conditional probabilities of substance use disorders and associated risk factors: Progression from first use to use disorder on alcohol, cannabis, stimulants, sedatives and opioids

Substance use is common around the world, but not everyone who uses will go on to develop a substance use disorder (SUD; i.e., DSM-IV criteria for abuse and/or dependence on alcohol or other drugs). Of the 250 million adults estimated to have used drugs at least once, in 2015, approximately 11.8% experienced a SUD (UNoDC, 2017). Findings from epidemiological research report considerable variability within and between substances in relation to the proportion of people who have used a substance that develop a SUD (i.e., conditional prevalence) and the speed of transition from use to use disorder.
