(Reuters Health) - When getting their infants vaccinated, mothers were more likely to use proven techniques to ease babies' pain if they had been taught how to do so before taking their newborns home from the hospital, a study found.

Abstract Vaccine controversies affect the image of vaccination. At the end of 2014, there was a shortage of tetra- and pentavalent vaccines, although immunization obligation was being discussed. Our objective in this context was to study the social representations of mandatory vaccination in general practitioners and patients. Thirty general practitioners and 30 patients were recruited for this study based on hierarchal evocation. Each provided seven associations, which were revealed spontaneously in response to the evocation of the inductive concept: "mandatory vaccination". An order of importance and a...

This report, based on updated health ministry data, describes progress to eradicate dracunculiasis during January 2018-June 2019 and updates previous reports (2,4,5). With only five countries currently affected by dracunculiasis (Angola, Chad, Ethiopia, Mali, and South Sudan), achievement of eradication is within reach, but it is challenged by civil unrest, insecurity, and lingering epidemiologic and zoologic questions. Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) infections can cause severe and debilitating joint and muscular pain that can be long lasting. Current CHIKV vaccines under development rely on the generation of neutralizing antibodies for protection; however, the role of T cells in controlling CHIKV infection and disease is still unclear. Using an overlapping peptide library, we identified the CHIKV-specific T cell receptor epitopes recognized in C57BL/6 infected mice at 7 and 14 days post-infection. A fusion protein containing peptides 451, 416, a small region of nsP4, peptide 47, and an HA tag (CHKVf5) was expressed using adenovirus and cytome...

CONCLUSIONS This study contributed to the knowledge on the profile of confirmed cases of high severity yellow fever. The main factors associated with death were changes in renal excretion and elevated serum transaminases, especially ALT. High lethality emphasizes the need for early diagnosis and treatment, and the importance of increasing vaccination coverage.RESUMO OBJETIVO Descrever o perfil cl ínico-epidemiológico dos casos confirmados de febre amarela internados em hospital geral de referência para doenças infecciosas no estado do Rio de Janeiro, Brasil, de 11 de março de 2017 a 15 de ...

Conclusions: The results obtained confirmed that the number of declared mild and moderate AEFI is related to a lower parental educational level and is associated with a better experience as a consequence of a higher number of vaccinations given. Frequent AEFI reporters represent negative attitudes toward vaccinations. Further investigation with the exact surveillance system is needed to improve parental trust in vaccination safety.

Chikungunya Virus-Encoded nsP2, E2, and E1 Strongly Antagonizes the Interferon β Signaling Pathway. J Microbiol Biotechnol. 2019 Oct 22;: Authors: Bae S, Lee JY, Myoung J Abstract Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is a single-stranded positive-sense RNA virus, belonging to the genus alphavirus of the Togaviridae family. It causes multiple symptoms, including headache, fever, severe joint and muscle pain, and arthralgia. Since CHIKV was first isolated in Tanzania in 1952, there have been multiple outbreaks of CHIKV. However, its pathogenesis and mechanisms of viral immune evasion have been poorly understo...

Authors: Macomb CV, Evans MO, Dockstater JE, Montgomery JR, Beakes DE Abstract Shoulder injury related to vaccine administration (SIRVA) is defined as "shoulder pain with limited range of motion within 48 hours after vaccine receipt in individuals with no prior history of pain, inflammation, or dysfunction of the affected shoulder before vaccine administration." Corticosteroid injections (CSIs) have been proposed as a reasonable treatment modality for SIRVA, although evidence regarding efficacy is scanty. In this case series, we present two patients diagnosed with SIRVA who received CSI within 5 days of s...
