Oxford, Glasgow, Swansea best for medicine?

This article has recently been published on the doctors.net website:- Oxford is the best university for studying medicine while the new school of Swansea continues to attract high ratings from medical students, according to a new league table. The Sunday Times table places Glasgow Medical School as the second best with Swansea third. According to the table, Imperial College, London, is the fourth best while Cambridge comes in fifth. But a second analysis of universities by the newspaper placed Oxford and Cambridge bottom of the league for inclusivity. In the medical school table, Warwick is placed last with Liverpool, St George’s in London, Southampton and Manchester also in the bottom five. The table uses teaching quality, research quality and reported student experience to build its ratings. It also includes graduate prospects. Swansea keeps its high ranking through a quality of teaching quality and student experience – although Oxford outranks it on both. According to the analysis just 40% of students at Oxford University do not come from private or grammar schools. Out of the 20 lowest ranked universities for social inclusivity, 16 are Russell Group institutions. In contrast Aston University in Birmingham – with one of the country’s newest medical schools – takes more than 70% of its students from ethnic minorities. Labour MP David Lammy condemned the Oxbridge and Russell Group universities as “gated communities for the privileged.” Credit: do...
