Sudden cardiac death from ventricular arrhythmias accounts for a significant number of deaths in patients suffering from heart failure (HF). Dey et  al (Circ Res 2018;123:356, PMID 29898892) tested the mechanistic roles of mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (mROS) in an in vivo model of nonischemic HF. The investigators demonstrated that there is a significant increase in mROS in failing ventricular myocytes. More importantly, treatment wi th MitoTEMPO, a mitochondrially targeted antioxidant, results in normalization of cellular ROS, reverses HF, as well as electrical remodeling.
