Medical News Today: Are red spots on the breast a sign of cancer?

There are many possible causes of red spots or a rash on the breast, including allergic reactions, infections, problems with the milk ducts, and several other skin conditions. In this study, we constructed a dual function nanosystem, copper sulfide nanoplatform loaded with the chemotherapeutic drug docetaxel wrapped by a conjugated polymer-peptide for targeted chemo-phototherapy. The nanoconstruct has been successfully designed with a size of 186.1 ± 5.2 nm, a polydispersity index of 0.18 ± 0.01, and zeta potential of −16.4 ± 0.1 mV. The enhanced uptake and near-infrared-responsive behavior of the nanosystem resulted in efficient drug release, photothermal ablation, effective cytotoxic activity, and potentiated reactive oxygen sp...

We examined the U.S. thoracic surgery workforce using the 2010 and 2014 Area Health Resource Files. We calculated the density of thoracic surgeons per 100,000 persons for each year at the state and county level. We performed descriptive statistics and developed maps highlighting changes over time and geographic regions.ResultsDespite an overall increase in thoracic surgeons from 2010 to 2014, we observed declining density nationwide (1.5% change) and in sparsely populated states. The difference in thoracic surgeon density widened slightly between 2010 from 0.80 per 100,000 compared to 0.84 per 100,000 in 2014 in all rural ...

Salem, Wafaa Gh Shousha, Sherif F. EL-Khamisy, Sherif M. ShawkyAbstractDevelopment of ultra-sensitive, high specific and cost-effective nucleic acids (NAs) biosensors is critical for early diagnosis of cancer, genetic diseases and follows up response to treatment. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as sensing materials underwent significant development in recent years due to their unique merits, such as structural diversity, tunable pore scale, large surface ar...

Here, we developed an electrochemical biosensor with a novel methodology to detect microRNA-21 (miR21) at an ultralow level and broad linear detection range. A three-way junction RNA structure was designed harboring (i) a methylene blue (MB)-modified hairpin structure at its one leg t...

We examined whether knowing someone who has an advanced breast cancer would influence knowledge, attitudes, beliefs, and practices of self and clinical breast-examination. We conducted a descriptive cross-sectional survey of 67 women, who were purposively sampled based on relation, through patients receiving palliative care services at a tertiary healthcare facility. Participants were non-blood relation of the patients and hence, referred to as patients’ micro-community. Data were collected from January to June 2018, using an adapted and adopted questionnaire and analyzed in R software version 3.5.1.3. Statistical si...

Menadione reduces the numbers and incidences of 1,2-dimethylhydrazine induced colon tumors in mouse but the mechanism of anticancer activity of menadione in colorectal cancer is not very clear. Since Wnt signaling is constitutively active in CRC and it aggravates the epithelial mesenchymal transition (EMT), the regulation of EMT and Wnt signaling by menadione (vitamin K3...
