A Camp for Children With Apraxia of Speech

Speech-language pathologist Laura Moorer organizes a summer camp in Texas to help those with childhood apraxia of speech (CAS). Recently featured on Denton’s local NBC affiliate, Moore’s emplyer, Texas Woman’s University in Denton, hosts the Childhood Apraxia and Motor Planning (CHAMP) Camp, which completed its fifth year today. Moorer talks about what it’s like for children to experience apraxia of speech and how the camp can improve their speech skills and build confidence. Improvising Social Skills For Teens With ASD A Detroit-based SLP has built a camp for kids with developmental delays that offers free sessions focusing on speech-language skills, motor skills and more. Children who use AAC devices put on a play at a family camp to show the world that communicating is more than talking. CAS occurs in only one or two children out of 1,000, so many camps offering intensive treatment like this cost thousands of dollars. CHAMP camp is only $250 for two-weeks of daily sessions and activities, thanks to the university’s support.   Shelley D.
