The impact of Cannabidiol treatment on regulatory T-17 Cells and neutrophil polarization in Acute Kidney Injury.

The impact of Cannabidiol treatment on regulatory T-17 Cells and neutrophil polarization in Acute Kidney Injury. Am J Physiol Renal Physiol. 2018 Jun 13;: Authors: Baban B, Hoda MN, Malik A, Khodadadi H, Simmerman E, Vaibhav K, Mozaffari MS Abstract Hallmark features of acute kidney injury (AKI) include mobilization of immune and inflammatory mechanisms culminating in tissue injury. Emerging information indicates heterogeneity of neutrophils with pro- and anti-inflammatory functions (N1 and N2, respectively). Also, regulatory T-17 (Treg17) cells curtail Th-17-mediated pro-inflammatory responses. However, the status of Treg17 cells and neutrophil phenotypes in AKI are not established. Further, cannabidiol exerts immunoregulatory effects but its impact on Treg17 cells and neutrophil subtypes is not established. Thus, we examined the status of Treg17 cells and neutrophil subtypes in AKI and determined whether cannabidiol favors regulatory neutrophils and T cells accompanied with renoprotection. Accordingly, mice were subjected to bilateral renal ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI), without or with cannabidiol treatment; thereafter, kidneys were processed for flow cytometry analyses. Renal IRI increased N1 and Th-17 but reduced N2 and Treg17 cells accompanied with disruption of mitochondrial membrane potential (ψm), increased apoptosis/necrosis and kidney injury molecule-1 (KIM-1) immunostaining compared to their sham controls. Importantly, cannabidiol tre...

Authors: Shabataev V, Saadat SH, Elterman DS Abstract The two major long-term concerns associated with different options for the management of prostate cancer, (including surgery, radiotherapy, brachytherapy, cryotherapy, HIFU, etc.) include difficulties with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) and/or erectile dysfunction. LUTS can be in the form of stress urinary incontinence (SUI), urge urinary incontinence (UUI), frequency/urgency, and/or voiding difficulties. While surgery is mostly associated with SUI and radiation mostly results in UUI, there can be an overlap. Incontinence rates after cryotherapy and high in...

Authors: Magee DE, Singal RK Abstract Our objective is to provide an up-to-date summary of current literature on the indications for androgen deprivation therapy (ADT), ways in which ADT is used, and the main side effects associated with its use. MEDLINE (Pubmed) was searched for relevant papers published from database inception to May 1, 2019 for studies evaluating the use of ADT and its associated adverse events. ADT is a mainstay in the treatment of prostate cancer and is used throughout the disease course. While predominantly used in the metastatic setting, ADT has a role in the treatment of localized disease a...

Authors: Law KW, Nguyen DD, Barkin J, Zorn KC Abstract Prostate cancer screening remains highly controversial in medicine. The College of Family Physicians of Canada currently endorses positions that recommend against prostate-specific antigen (PSA) screening in men of all ages, while the Canadian Urological Association recommends shared and informed decision making for PSA screening in men 50-70 years old. Unfortunately, these opposing stances have left Family Physicians responsible for interpreting the appropriate course of action for their patients. Recent studies demonstrating an increase in incidence of metast...

Conclusion: Feeling healthy may exacerbate barriers to ART initiation. Strategies to reach healthy clients are needed, such as chronic care models, differentiated models of care that minimize disruptions to daily activities, and community sensitization on the benefits of early initiation. Authors: Famakinde DO Abstract With the advent of CRISPR (clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeat)-based gene drive, present genetic research in schistosomiasis vector control envisages the breeding and release of transgenic schistosome-resistant (TSR) snail vectors to curb the spread of the disease. Although this approach is still in its infancy, studies focussing on production of genetically modified (GM) mosquitoes (including gene-drive mosquitoes) are well advanced and set the pace for other transgenic vector research. Unfortunately, as with other GM mosquitoes, open field release of gene-drive...
