Authors: Spiliopoulos S, Hergesell V, Wasler A, Dapunt O Abstract Due to the declining instances of organ donation, total artificial heart (TAH) therapy is of increasing importance for the management of end-stage biventricular heart failure. We introduce the currently most important established and novel TAH systems (SynCardia, CARMAT, ReinHeart, BiVACOR), report clinical outcomes and discuss technical requirements for the successful implementation of TAH therapy as an alternative to cardiac transplantation. Authors: Xu L, Chen Y, Ji Y, Yang S Abstract Factors influencing N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) level in heart failure patients with different cardiac functions were identified to explore the correlations with prognosis. Eighty heart failure patients with different cardiac functions treated in Yixing People's Hospital from January 2016 to June 2017 were selected, and divided into two groups (group with cardiac function in class II and below and group with cardiac function in class III and above), according to the cardiac function classification established by New York Heart Association (NYHA)....

We present a 49-year-old man with no history of cardiovascular disease who was admitted to our hospital with pulmonary edema. He was in atrial fibrillation with rapid ventricular response. Echocardiography showed a 10.5-cm left atrial myxoma, which had been asymptomatic until the onset of congestive heart failure in the presence of severe left ventricular systolic dysfunction. Left ventricular inflow obstruction associated with the giant atrial mass could not be the only cause for acute heart failure. PMID: 29904302 [PubMed]

Heart failure is a complex syndrome that causes substantial functional impairment and poor outcomes. Although multidisciplinary disease management programmes are effective, the role of additional outpatient-based exercise training and the effects of multidisciplinary disease management programmes for patients with contraindications to exercise training are unclear.

AbstractPulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a progressive disease primarily affecting the pulmonary vasculature and heart. PAH patients suffer from exercise intolerance and fatigue, negatively affecting their quality of life. This review summarizes current insights in the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying PAH. It zooms in on the potential involvement of nutritional status and micronutrient deficiencies on PAH exercise intolerance and fatigue, also summarizing the potential benefits of exercise and nutritional interventions. Pubmed/Medline, Scopus, and Web of Science were searched for publications on pathophysio...

Baylor St. Luke ’s Medical Center announced June 15 that it has reactivated its heart-transplant surgery program and is accepting donor hearts for transplants again. The hospital voluntarily suspended the surgery program on June 1. The two-week suspension did not affect other heart-failure procedures, such as he art-pump implants, or any other transplant programs across the hospital.  According to a message posted on the hospital’s website, the following steps have been taken since June 1: A…

N‑terminal truncated peroxisome proliferator‑activated receptor‑γ coactivator‑1α alleviates phenylephrine‑induced mitochondrial dysfunction and decreases lipid droplet accumulation in neonatal rat cardiomyocytes. Mol Med Rep. 2018 Jun 14;: Authors: Liu Z, Hua J, Cai W, Zhan Q, Lai W, Zeng Q, Ren H, Xu D Abstract N‑terminal truncated peroxisome proliferator‑activated receptor‑γ coactivator‑1α (NT‑PGC‑1α) is an alternative splice variant of PGC‑1α. NT‑PGC‑1α exhibits stronger anti‑obesity effects in adipose tissue than PGC‑1α...

Weighted gene co‑expression network analysis in identification of key genes and networks for ischemic‑reperfusion remodeling myocardium. Mol Med Rep. 2018 Jun 14;: Authors: Guo N, Zhang N, Yan L, Lian Z, Wang J, Lv F, Wang Y, Cao X Abstract Acute myocardial infarction induces ventricular remodeling, which is implicated in dilated heart and heart failure. The pathogenical mechanism of myocardium remodeling remains to be elucidated. The aim of the present study was to identify key genes and networks for myocardium remodeling following ischemia‑reperfusion (IR). First, the mRNA expression data ...

Screening genes associated with elevated neutrophil‑to‑lymphocyte ratio in chronic heart failure. Mol Med Rep. 2018 Jun 05;: Authors: Wan G, Ji L, Xia W, Cheng L, Zhang Y Abstract Neutrophil‑to‑lymphocyte ratio (NLR) is commonly considered a useful prognostic index for many cardiovascular diseases; however, it has limited sensitivity and specificity. Factors associated with elevated NLR may aid in the prediction of prognosis with heart failure (HF) in combination with NLR. The present study sought to identify decisive factors associated with NLR in HF patients and investigate their association ...
