Association of Prenatal Ultrasonography and Autism

To the Editor The article “Association of Prenatal Ultrasonography and Autism Spectrum Disorder” by Rosman et al reports “significantly greater mean depth of ultrasonographic penetration in the ASD [autism spectrum disorder] group compared with the developmental delay group in the first trimester and compared with the typical development group in the first and second trimesters. Further research is needed to determine whether other variables of ultrasound exposure also have adverse effects on the developing fetus.” These words, which appear in the conclusion of the abstract, do not accurately reflect the findin gs of this case-control study. Further, in apparent contravention ofJAMA Pediatrics ’ guidance for reporting clinical studies of this nature, no recruitment flowchart with participant exclusion/inclusion criteria is shown, and neither a priori hypothesis, predefined primary outcome, nor sample size calculation are included.
