Perceived stress correlates with visceral obesity and lipid parameters of the metabolic syndrome: a systematic review and meta- analysis

Stress is regarded as one of the major public health challenges of the 21st century. Psychological stress has been suggested as a risk factor that may prospectively predict metabolic syndrome (Aschbacher et al., 2014; Pyykkonen et al., 2010). Other studies have also indicated that life stress may lead to metabolic syndrome (Steptoe and Kivim äki, 2013). A cross-sectional study of radiologists demonstrated that professionals characterized by elevated levels of stress had a significantly higher risk of metabolic syndrome than colleagues with lower stress (Magnavita and Fileni, 2014).
