Evaluation of an intravenous proton pump inhibitor restriction service

Background: Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are amongst the most frequently prescribed and used medications worldwide. In January 2016, Loyola University Medical Center responded to a critical national shortage of intravenous (IV) pantoprazole and esomeprazole by implementing a new IV PPI restriction process. Patients had to meet certain criteria in order to be initiated on the formulary IV PPI, pantoprazole. The aim of this study was to determine the impact on utilization rates after implementing an IV pantoprazole restriction service.
