Five-Day Nitrofurantoin Beats Single-Dose Fosfomycin for UTI

TUESDAY, April 24, 2018 -- Five-day nitrofurantoin is associated with increased likelihood of clinical and microbiological resolution compared with single-dose fosfomycin among women with lower urinary tract infection (UTI), according to a study...

Conclusions A decision support methodology such as our proof of concept could aid hospital executives in prioritizing the quality improvement initiatives within their hospital, with more complete data. Because hospitals continue to struggle in improving quality of care with tighter budgets, a formal decision support mechanism could be used to objectively prioritize patient safety and quality initiatives.

ConclusionsDorsal urethral diverticulum in women, particularly when very proximal, can present a diagnostic and surgical challenge for reconstructive pelvic surgeons. The robotic approach to urethral diverticulectomy is feasible for a proximal dorsal urethral diverticulum which lies cephalad to the pubic symphysis. This or other laparoscopic applications may also be considered as an adjunct to the standard vaginal approach for complex urethral diverticuli with a proximal dorsal component.

ConclusionDuplicated urinary collecting systems are the most common birth defect related to the urinary tract and can be frequently encountered by the pelvic surgeon. Knowledge of the presentation and workup of a suspected duplicated collecting system is important in carrying out appropriate treatment.

Conclusion: Based on current research, we recommend that a child with a UTI and significant VUR be treated conservatively at first, with surgical care reserved for children who have issues with antimicrobials or have clinically significant VUR that persists after several years of follow-up.Urol Int

ana Balarjishvili In this retrospective descriptive study we focus on cases of three patients who underwent phage therapy procedures at Eliava Phage Therapy Center (EPTC) in Tbilisi, Georgia. Patients with chronic infectious diseases related to Pseudomonas aeruginosa (two patients, lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI)) and Klebsiella pneumoniae (one patient, urinary tract infection (UTI)) are among those very few EPTC patients whose pathogens persisted through phage therapy. By looking at bacterial strains and personalized phages used against them we tried to point towards possible adaptation strategies that are em...

This study clarifies the clonal background and extensive virulence genotypes of the E. coli strains that cause hemorrhagic pneumonia in domestic animals (mainly dogs and cats), shows that such strains circulate among animals and humans, identifies a substantial intestinal colonization component to their lifestyle, and extends their known clinical manifestations to include bacteremia and urinary tract infection. The findings place these strains better into context vis-a-vis current understandings of E. coli phylogeny, ecology, and pathogenesis; identify questions for future research; and may prove relevant for surveillance ...

Conclusion: The prevalence of UTI and MDR to commonly used antibiotics among diabetic patients is alarming, and thus, isolation of uropathogenic bacteria and antimicrobial susceptibility testing is crucial for the treatment of UTI in persons with diabetes.

ConclusionThe nationwide retrospective cohort study demonstrated that short-term therapeutic dose of antibiotics for UTI in infants with or without VUR has a positive correlation with the prevalence of childhood asthma. Significant risk of childhood asthma was not observed when VUR cohort was exposed to long-term low-dose of prophylactic antibiotics.
