Spastic peroneal flatfoot (SPFF) is a rare hindfoot pathology usually seen in the adolescent age group that is characterized by painful spasms in the peroneal muscles. We have clinically observed that patients with SPFF also have some behavioral and emotional difficulties and problems in their academic achievements. Because of these observations, we investigated the prevalence and patterns of psychiatric disorders and intellectual disability among young subjects with SPFF. Our cohort consisted of 16 patients with SPFF.

CONCLUSIONS: The rate of mental health presentations to EDs increased significantly in NSW between 2010 and 2014, particularly presentations by adolescents. Urgent action is needed to provide better access to adolescent mental health services in the community and to enhance ED models of mental health care. The underlying drivers of this trend should be investigated to improve mental health care. PMID: 29669496 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a common, disabling, and comorbid disorder that is a leading cause of suicide and substance abuse. It requires exposure to an extreme, life-threatening stress; while the symptoms can be apparent early after trauma, they can also last a lifetime. In addition to being clinically significant and of great public health importance, PTSD also may be important to psychiatry for what it can provide to the field. It is perhaps the only disorder in our nosology where the defining inciting event is known: the trauma exposure.
