Abstract We investigated the learning curve for using intraoperative neural monitoring technology in thyroid cancer, with a view to reducing recurrent laryngeal nerve injury complications. Radical or combined radical surgery for thyroid cancer was performed in 82 patients with thyroid cancer and 147 recurrent laryngeal nerves were dissected. Intraoperative neural monitoring technology was applied and the "four-step method" used to monitor recurrent laryngeal nerve function. When the intraoperative signal was attenuated by more than 50%, recurrent laryngeal nerve injury was diagnosed, and the point and ca...

EdwardsABSTRACTNegative stain electron microscopy (NSEM) is a simple and cost effective method to analyze a wide variety of specimens, especially proteins. In traditional NSEM, the protein sample is applied to and supported by a continuous carbon film. Unfortunately, many proteins stick to the carbon film with a limited number of orientations. Because the restricted orientation limits the available views of the molecule, information about the three-dimensional structure of the molecule is likewise limited. The method pre...
We report the sharp reduction in the incidence of AIDS defining cancers in a multicentric, retrospective study carried out since 1991 and involving six Infectious Diseases Units spread across Italy. However, due to the parallel increase in non-AIDS defining cancers, cancer incidence was not reduced. Focusing on predictors of death in HIV-positive patients with neoplastic disease, multivariate models revealed that males as well as drug abusers were independently associated with a poor clinical outcome.
