[Comment] Challenges in reducing influenza-associated mortality

This study provides a much needed update to the often cited but unsubstantiated WHO-attributed estimate of 250  000–500 000 annual influenza deaths. The authors used country-specific, influenza-associated excess respiratory mortality estimates from 1999 to 2015, to calculate a new estimate of 291 243–645 832 seasonal influenza-associated respiratory deaths per year (4·0–8·8 per 100 000 indi viduals).
