Heterotopic Ossification: The Keys to the Kingdom

The metamorphosis of one mature tissue into another is one of the rarest and enigmatic events in medicine. When it involves the transformation of soft connective tissues into mature heterotopic bone, the process is called heterotopic ossification (HO). HO is exemplified by two ultra-rare genetic disorders that are progressive and disabling - fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP) and progressive osseous heteroplasia (POH) - as well as a myriad of more common acquired and sporadic conditions.
