Eosinopenia in women with schizophrenia: Drug-induced or a sign of gender specific difference in pathogenesis?

The amount of literature investigating the immunological and epigenetic aspects of schizophrenia is vastly growing. The involvement of immunological aspects presents itself e.g. in an altered distribution of leukocytes amongst patients with schizophrenia, compared to healthy controls (Voss et al., 2000). Sex has been proposed to be of significance to both etiology of schizophrenia (Chase et al., 2015) and to response to pharmacological treatment (Morag et al., 2013). The antipsychotic drug Clozapine is associated with several types of blood dyscrasia, including an increased risk of transient female eosinophilia (Rajagopal, 2005).
