After the Fall: Getting Up From an MS Tumble

I believe there are two kinds of people: those who divide the world into two kinds of people and those who don’t. I always told culinary students, however, that there were two kinds of people in professional kitchens; those who have been cut and those who have yet to be cut.  Likewise it could be said that people with MS have either already fallen or are yet to fall – but we know that might be too general a statement. So many times in the history of the Life With MS Blog we’ve given attention to the figurative “getting up after a fall.”  Today I think we should focus on safely getting back up after the physical falls that can happen due to MS. The first and best advice about getting back up is to not fall in the first place. Sounds obvious, but an ounce prevention is indeed worth a pound of cure in this case. If you search the Internet you’re bound to find some very helpful videos on general safety and techniques for safely getting back up from the floor.  Here is one which is aimed at seniors but has very good tips from a physical therapist. Talk with your doctor and or nurse about getting a lesson or two (either from them or from a rehab specialist) the next time you’re in for an appointment.  Learning how, and practicing every now and again, is the best way to remember when heel-toe becomes heel-knee-ground.
