There has been growing attention to quality measurement in surgical oncology. The 1999 landmark publication “To Err is Human” by the Institute of Medicine brought widespread awareness to deficiencies in patient safety.1 In the same year, the Institute of Medicine reported substantial variation in quality of cancer care in “Ensuring Quality Cancer Care.”2 In the ensuing decades, the National Qualit y Forum launched a program to encourage development of cancer-specific quality measures and, in 2007, endorsed 5 quality measures developed in a joint effort between the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (ACS CoC), National Comprehensive Cancer Network, and American Society of Clinic al Oncology.
