Databases for surgical health services research: National Trauma Database and Trauma Quality Improvement Program

The American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma (ACSCOT) is the oldest standing committee of the American College of Surgeons. It was established in 1922 and has made a continuous effort since then to improve the care of injured patients through a variety of programs. With the National Trauma Data Base (NTDB) and the Trauma Quality Improvement Program (TQIP) in particular, the ACSCOT have established a database that is one of the leading performance improvement tools for trauma care that is utilized for both research and quality improvement for trauma centers across the United States (Table).
