In this study it was investigated the role of ZafA on gene expression at a genome wide scale by comparing the transcriptional profile of a wild-type strain of A. fumigatus with that of a dzafA null strain grown in zinc-limiting media. The analysis of the results indicated that among genes up-regulated under zinc-limiting conditions were those most directly involved in zinc homeostasis such as zafA, that encoded for the ZafA transcriptional regulator of zinc homeostasis, zrfA, zrfB and zrfC that encoded zinc transporters presumably located at the plasma membrane and zrfF that encodes a zinc transporter located presumably at...

This study was conducted to investigate the natural co‐occurrence of 295 fungal and bacterial metabolites in 28 samples of dried date palm fruits collected from different shops distributed in Assiut Governorate, Upper Egypt in 2016. Extraction and quantification of the target analytes were done using the “dilute and shoot” approach followed by liquid chromatography‐tandem mass spectrometry (LC‐MS/MS) analysis. In total, 30 toxic fungal metabolites were detected. Among these metabolites, 4 types of ochratoxins including ochratoxin type A and B were quantified in 3 samples (11%) with a contamination range f...

Authors: Gutarowska B, Izdebski M Abstract An expert program has been developed for users working in industrial laboratories who are not experts in the identification of filamentous fungi. The database of morphological growth features currently contains 12 species from the genera Aspergillus and Penicillium grown under standard conditions. The identification algorithm implemented in the database takes into account the reliability of users, which can vary over a wide range depending on the identification feature. The reliability of users was estimated on the basis of a questionnaire survey conducted among 27 non-exp...

Authors: Saif MJ, Zuber M, Anwar J, Munawar MA Abstract The antimicrobial activity of two new series of bis-piperidinium compounds with alkyl chains of different lengths against bacterial (Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis) and fungal strains (Aspergillus flavus, Aspergillus niger, Rhodolorula rubera, Lipomyces lopofera and Candida albicans), are described. Antimicrobial activities of the synthesized compounds were compared to that of dodecyltrimethylammonium chloride. Bis-piperidinium salts possessing 12-16 carbon side chains showed better antimicrobial propertie...

Senna occidentalis (L.) Link and Senna hirsuta (L.) H. S. Irwin &Barneby: constituents of fruit essential oils and antimicrobial activity. Nat Prod Res. 2018 Jan 18;:1-4 Authors: Essien EE, Thomas PS, Ascrizzi R, Setzer WN, Flamini G Abstract Senna occidentalis and S. hirsuta are mostly gathered from the wild for medicinal use and have a disagreeable odour when crushed. The volatile oils isolated from fresh fruits of S. occidentalis and S. hirsuta were subjected to gas chromatography (GC), gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and antimicrobial assays. GC and GC-MS analyses permitted the id...

Purpose: To assess the pattern of microbial keratitis after accelerated corneal collagen cross-linkage (aCXL) in patients with keratoconus. Method: The medical records of cases of keratoconus that underwent aCXL from June 2014 to May 2017 were reviewed. Cases that developed microbial keratitis after aCXL were included in the study. The clinical, microbiological profile and the treatment outcomes were evaluated. Results: Of 532 eyes that underwent aCXL, 7 cases developed microbial keratitis during the study period. Median age at presentation was 11 years (range 8–17). Association with vernal keratoconjunctivit...
