Indications and complications in relation to removal of clavicle implants.

CONCLUSIONS: The indications for clavicle plate removal are many and mainly subjective. Implant removal in patients following surgically treated clavicle fractures generally causes very few complications, and most patients seem to experience a positive effect. However, it is important to inform the patient of the risk of no remission or even a worsening, which is not an uncommon occurrence. FUNDING: none. TRIAL REGISTRATION: not relevant. We thank the authors for the comments related to this article. We appreciate their comments and suggestions and agree that these studies can be challenging but can also move patient care forward. Obtaining accurate pain scores can be highly subjective and relies on patients reporting pain at a single point in time and a nurse recording the pain score accurately.7 Although pain is subjective, our ability to enter and access the data is much less subjective. In our institution, we have a highly integrated electronic medical records system through EPIC Enterprises (Verona, WI, USA).

ConclusionsPatients ’ expectations of osteotomies around the knee are high in terms of capacity to work, pain relief, and restoring functions. The natural course of osteoarthritis and the potential need for conversion to TKA were underestimated by a substantial proportion of the study population. However, the expecta tion regarding survival rate is in line with the reported literature. The results of this study should assist surgeons in discussing realistic expectations when considering and counselling patients regarding osteotomies around the knee. This may help to clarify realistic expectations preoperatively and u...
