Perianesthesia Nurses and the Family Caregiver

NOVEMBER WAS FAMILY caregiver recognition month, focusing on the challenges family caregivers face when their loved ones need around-the-clock care. While perianesthesia nurses typically deal with short-term acute care needs that affect caregivers, we also interface with caregivers responsible for chronic care needs. Examples include the Alzheimer's patient who is cared for by his wife at home after an ambulatory orthopaedic procedure, or a chronically ill or aged parent with arthritis who had surgery for cataracts and is cared for by adult children.
