Cohen Sterilization is the most common form of contraception used worldwide and is highly effective in preventing unintended pregnancy. Several sterilization methods exist, each with unique advantages and disadvantages that influence the preferred approach for an individual patient. Salpingectomy for sterilization has popularized in recent years with mounting evidence suggesting a protective effect against ovarian cancers that originate from the fallopian tube. At the same time, EssureĀ® hysteroscopic sterilization has come under scrutiny due to increasing reports of adverse effects that may be related to the device. This paper reviews clinical updates in sterilization, with a focus on salpingectomy and Essure hysteroscopic sterilization.
