In conclusion, most experimental data on immune changes with aging show a decline in many immune parameters when compared to young healthy subjects. The bulk of these changes is termed immunosenescence. Immunosenescence has been considered for some time as detrimental because it often leads to subclinical accumulation of pro-inflammatory factors and inflammaging. Together, immunosenescence and inflammaging are suggested to stand at the origin of most of the diseases of the elderly, such as infections, cancer, autoimmune disorders, and chronic inflammatory diseases. However, an increasing number of gerontologists have chall...

In January, 2018, Academic Press published my bookPrecision Medicine and the Reinvention of Human Disease. This book has an excellent " look inside " at itsGoogle book site, which includes the Table of Contents. In addition, I thought it might be helpful to see the topics listed in the Book's index. Conclusion Our study indicated that familial Mediterranean fever constituted a large proportion of cases and increased number of patients with idiopathic amyloid A amyloidosis. Additionally, it was observed that patient survival was not affected by different etiological causes in amyloid A amyloidosis.

Discussion The nail matrix covers the area of the nail plate, and extends proximally in a crescent moon shape with the edges of the crescent extending proximally and inferiorly toward the underlying bone. The nail matrix is a multilayered epithelium that physiologically produces keratinization and gives rise to the nail plate. The distal matrix forms the lower 2/3s of the nail plate and the proximal matrix forms the upper 1/3 of the nail plate. the thickness of the nail plate is proportion to the matrix’s thickness. The nail plate’s free edge contour follows the shape of the nail’s lunula. Melanocytes occ...

We report two pediatric cases with SOJIA and nephrotic syndrome secondary to renal amyloidosis, a very rare complication in children. Once present, amyloidosis heralds a poor prognosis for the patient, though early detection may allow some improvement if the inflammatory arthritis is controlled. PMID: 29265055 [PubMed - in process]

Abstract Seven months after undergoing kidney transplantation, a 56-year-old woman presented with papules and ulcers in her right forearm. The patient received antibiotics for 8 months with limited improvement. Eleven months after symptom onset, she presented with acute arthritis in her left knee. Asynovial fluid culture yielded Mycobacterium tuberculosis, and a forearm ulcer biopsy showed granulomatous inflammation. After surgical fistulectomy and 12 months of tuberculosis treatment, she was cured. Chronic cutaneous ulcers and articular manifestations in TB are rare, but they should always be considered in the differentia...

CONCLUSIONS: Patients with biopsy-proven TG demonstrated significantly increased levels of anti-vimentin Abs of the IgG isotype compared with stable KTxRs. Anti-vimentin in stable KTxRs was primarily of IgM isotype. Therefore, the observed isotype switching of anti-vimentin from IgM to IgG isotype strongly suggests ongoing immune responses to vimentin in KTxRs diagnosed with TG. Furthermore, as opposed to patients with rheumatoid arthritis (who develop immune responses primarily to citrullinated vimentin), KTxRs diagnosed with TG developed immune responses to non-citrullinated vimentin, suggesting that modification of vime...

This study developed the first procedure for the removal of epithelium from the lung airway with the full preservation of vascular epithelium, which could be applied in vivo to treat diseases of lung epithelium. Whole lung scaffolds with an intact vascular network may also allow for recellularization using patient-specific cells and bioengineering of chimeric lungs for transplantation. In addition to the clinical potential, lung scaffolds lacking an intact epithelial layer but with functional vascular and interstitial compartments may also serve as a valuable physiological model for investigating (i) lung development, (ii)...

lla J Abstract Although visceral leishmaniasis (VL) can affect immunocompromised patients, data from the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection context are limited, and the characteristics of VL in other immunosuppression scenarios are not well defined. A retrospective review of all cases of VL in immunocompromised patients from January 1997 to December 2014 in two Spanish hospitals on the Mediterranean coast was performed. We included 18 transplant recipients (kidney: 7, liver: 4, lung: 3, heart: 2, and blood marrow: 2), 12 patients with other causes of immunosuppression (myasthenia gravis: 3 and rheumatoid...
